If you’re a DIY junkie (or just love finding ways to save money), you’ll love today’s blog – I’m talking about how to make one of the most crucial pieces of survival food ever: survival bars.
What makes these tasty treats so amazing? Well, for one, they’re perfect for rationing. They’re incredibly high in calories, so you can (and should) break these survival bars into pieces and slowly savor them throughout the day.
Note: Please remember that, although these bars are extremely high in calories and will help keep you full, they are not meant to be the only food you eat. Serve a small piece of bar alongside some healthy freeze-dried vegetables and yummy freeze-dried fruits for a boost of much-needed vitamins and nutrition.
Another reason I love these is they’re ideal for bugging out. Unlike canned meats or freeze-dried foods that need hot water and/or heat to cook, survival bars are a one-stop shop of deliciousness. Just unwrap the casing and you’re good to go – no assembly required.
The third reason why I love survival bars is you can actually save quite a bit of money by making them yourself.

How to Make Homemade Survival Bars
1 – Grab the Goods
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Water (3 tablespoons)
- Sugar (1 cup)
- Honey (3 tablespoons)
- Powdered milk (2.5 cups)
- Oats (2 cups)
- Any flavor Jello gelatin (3 oz. box)
- 9″x13″ pan
- Parchment paper
- Mylar bags
2 – Mix The First Portion
Combine your sugar, powdered milk and oats into a large bowl. Stir until evenly distributed.
3 – Cook The Second Portion
Combine honey, water and jello mix into a pot, and bring to a boil.
Note: Stainless steel pots work really well for cooking this. If you’re in the market for some new cookware, these ones are excellent:
4 – Combine The Two
Add the liquid mixture in the pot to the mixing bowl and stir until mixed thoroughly.
5 – Add To Pan
Line the 9″x13″ pan with parchment paper, and pour the mixture onto it. Spread the mixture down and around the pan with your fingertips (or a spoon) to make sure it has even thickness on all sides.
6 – Calculate And Cut
This recipe makes a total of 3,000 calories. Calculate how many bars you want to make in order to distribute that ration (i.e: 8 bars = 375 calories per bar). Then, use a knife to cut that number of bars (make sure they are evenly cut).
7 – Time To Bake
Bake at 200°F for 2 hours. Remove the bars from the pan and onto a separate sheet of parchment paper. Let cool completely.
8 – Package
Once the bars have fully cooled, separate them into mylar bags for optimum shelf-life.
